Air quality management areas
Plymouth City Council is declaring three air quality management areas (AQMA) in the city due to vehicle emissions and an industrial source from a petrol station.
Mutley Plain NO2 AQMA
Mutley Plain is a busy shopping street with a relatively high level of congested traffic over four lanes. There are a number of sets of traffic lights, which cause the traffic to be relatively slow moving for much of the day. There are 7 monitoring locations around Mutley Plain and includes 6 diffusion tubes and a Nitrogen Dioxide continuous chemiluminescent analyser
The Detailed Assessment identified that there is an exceedence of the objective for NO2 based on monitoring data for 2004, when the data is forecast for 2005. It is for this reason that an AQMA is being declared on Mutley Plain.
Exeter Street NO2 AQMA
Exeter Street is the busiest transport route in Plymouth with over 50,00 vehicles using the route in a normal 24-hour period. There are a number of residential properties within the street situated close to the roadside, in addition to a number of commercial units. There are proposals to build further residential accommodation close to the roadside and site has been included within the proposed AQMA.

Exeter Street Benzene AQMA
This AQMA is being designated due to benzene concentrations. Benzene arises primarily from industrial sources and petrol driven vehicles. In this case benzene is predominantly from Exeter Street Petrol Station with some contribution expected from the road.
The proposed AQMA for this area includes properties in the immediate vicinity of the petrol station, namely Holy Cross Roman Catholic School and the St Thomas House residential property at 77-79 Exeter Street.
