So what happens if I apply?

If you contact the fostering service then you will be sent an information pack containing written information and our DVD. If you are still interested then the next step is to have an in-depth phone conversation with a social worker. They may then visit you in your own home to help you decide whether to make a formal application to become a foster carer.

If you decide to go ahead (and remember you can drop out at any time) then the following process will take place:

Application form - you will complete an application form, including detailed information about yourself and other members of your household.

Checks and references - with your permission, we will carry out checks and references:

• We will need to see formal identification (for example, passport or birth/marriage certificate)
• Enhanced Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) check
• If you have worked with children or young people then we will contact past and current employers
• You will attend a medical with your GP
• You must nominate a minimum of three referees who know you well, one of whom can be a family member
• Various other checks as appropriate including local authority, education, NSPCC and probation

Skills to Foster preparation training - this is a great chance to meet other people going through the same process, talk to experienced foster carers and learn about what it really means to be a foster carer.

Home study assessment - a fostering social worker will visit you 12 or more times to discuss every aspect of your application in detail. They will also visit your referees and any other relevant people. The assessment usually takes between four and six months, depending on your personal circumstances.

Form F report - your social worker will write a detailed report of your suitability to foster. You will be able to read, sign and comment on this.

Fostering panel and agency decision - the Form F report will be presented to the Plymouth Fostering Panel. You will be invited to attend the panel meeting with your social worker. The panel will recommend whether you should be approved as a foster carer. The agency decision-maker (the Assistant Director of Children's Social Care) will then make the final decision.

The assessment process will cover all aspects of your life in depth. It has been carefully designed to prepare you for fostering and make sure children will be safe with you. It can be demanding and may feel intrusive at times, but many people find it an enjoyable experience and we will support you every step of the way.
