Copying - terms and conditions
The law
Copying is subject to the terms of the 1988 Copyright, Designs and Patents Act.
Copying - general conditions
It is permissible in most cases to make a single copy of material held at Plymouth and West Devon Record Office (PWDRO). By signing a copyright declaration form (CDF) you are agreeing to use the material for personal or educational use only.
If copies of material held by PWDRO are required for publication either in hard copy form or electronically on the web, the approval of PWDRO must be obtained in advance.
If material is required for commercial publication, this will need to be agreed in writing through PWDRO. A charge may be collected
Parish registers (microform or hard copy) are not subject to copyright; completion of a CDF is therefore not necessary. Ordnance Survey material over fifty years old is not subject to copyright
Remote users wishing to place a copy order can download a CDF from our photocopying page and return it to PWDRO.
Photocopying
Photocopying is available in either size A3 or A4. Photocopying is carried out by staff only. Material which cannot be photocopied but may be photographed include:
- Bound volumes
- Documents larger than A3
- Fragile or damaged material
The decision of the search room staff as to whether or not material is fit to be copied will be final.
Photography
Both digital and traditional photography are permitted within the search room.
Charges are applicable: Daily £2.50, Weekly £7.50, Yearly £60.
A CDF must be completed listing all material that has been imaged.
The use of hand-held scanners is not permitted.
PWDRO digital photography service
PWDRO offers a digital copying service upon request. For further information about placing an order please contact us at pwdro@plymouth.gov.uk
