Latin, quills and the Spanish Armada education pack
The aim of this education pack is to provide children with the opportunity to develop a basic understanding of Latin and Old English Courthand writing, including experimenting with quills and ink. It also aims to develop pupils’ understanding of local history with reference to Plymouth’s links with the Spanish Armada, using primary sources as a stimulus.
The pack contains copies of original records held at Plymouth and West Devon Record Office with descriptions of the archives and ideas for activities, including lesson plans. It also has a comprehensive list of Key Stage 2 National Curriculum objectives which can be met during the activities.
A growing emphasis is being paid to teaching history using primary sources and this pack enables the teacher to provide those opportunities for their pupils. It is also a good way to introduce children to the relevance of archives and can be followed up with a visit to the Record Office.
This education pack includes
- copies of the documents for projection and printing purposes
- a presentation about Plymouth and West Devon Record Office, including some examples of archives
- descriptions of the documents
- activity ideas
- National Curriculum objectives
Additional resources for the pack can be loaned from the Record Office, these include:
- quill pens
- ink
- a story book about the Spanish Armada, '1588 great events, the Spanish Armada' by Gillian Clements
- a Plymouth and West Devon Record Office seal
- red wax
- red ribbon
If you are interested in any of the activities, or would simply like to learn more about the education and outreach opportunities, please contact the Community Engagement Officer on 01752 258733 or email us.
