Bluff Battery Devon County Geological Site
OS Sheets: 1:50k 201 1:10k SX45 SE, GS Sheet 1:50k 348
This location is a Devon County Geological Site and is located on the south side of Devonport Hill. The quarried outcrops display a transitional change in rock types from Middle Devonian dark grey shales to fossil-rich limestone. A rich fauna of stromatoporoids, coral colonies in position of growth, rugose corals and crinoid ossicles can be seen if you know what to look for. Fossils should not be collected but left for others to see.
The site is generally safe and there are regular bus services in and around Plymouth to Devonport Hill. The site can be accessed by footpaths from roads to the south of Devonport Hill.
See below for more detailed information from Devon County Council:
If you have visited the site please send in your photographs and we will put the best on this site.
