About Plymouth

Located in the south west, Plymouth has a resident population of 252,800 with a further 100,000 in its travel-to-work area. Its working age population is 161,400 (63.9 per cent of its total population compared to a national figure of 62.0 per cent)

Plymouth has a rich and fascinating past, based largely on its seafaring tradition and strong links with the military, but considerable diversification has taken place and the city now boasts a varied industrial base with six priority clusters for which Plymouth has a competitive advantage having been identified within the Local Economic Strategy:

  • Business services
  • Creative industries
  • Tourism and leisure
  • Marine industries
  • Medical and healthcare
  • Advanced engineering

Plymouth has made huge strides in recent times, transforming itself into one of the great cities in the country, and is currently going through a very exciting period in its history, with the scale of regeneration taking place second only to the post war reconstruction period.
