Wimbledon action in the heart of Plymouth
The Piazza, Armada Way
Monday 22 June to Sunday 5 July
Don't miss any of the action as the Armada Way Piazza is turned into Plymouth's very own centre court, with ball-by-ball Wimbledon coverage live from the All England Club. There's plenty of seating and a variety of food on offer from local suppliers, including, of course, strawberries and cream to bring the true Wimbledon atmosphere to Plymouth City Centre.
This is the second in a series of major Big Screen events taking place throughout the summer, bringing great sporting, theatre, dance and blockbuster films right into the heart of the city.
Spectators can sit back and marvel at the volleys, smashes and lightning speed serves as they cheer on British hopeful Andrew Murray and watch to see if anyone can rival the Williams’ sisters in the singles and doubles.
There will be plenty of other entertainment on offer for those watching the tennis during the weekend too, as furry friends from Build a Bear, outside Drake Circus, will come along to the Piazza to entertain children with Mascot tennis. Beremy and Pawlette will have their own tennis final from 1pm on Saturday 28 June and children will be able to cheer on their favourite mascot as they play tennis on the Piazza.
La Traviata
The Piazza
Tuesday 30 June, 7pm
The Royal Opera's La Traviata will be beamed live from Covent Garden's Royal Opera House to a big screen in The Piazza for the first time this summer as part of the BP Summer Big Screens Programme 2009. This free event will be one of 42 free screenings around the country this summer as thousands of people enjoy world-class opera and ballet in their own local area.
In La Traviata, the great American soprano Renée Fleming takes on the role of doomed courtesan Violetta, with Joseph Calleja as her young lover Alfredo and Thomas Hampson as his unyielding father in this well known classic love story. Gareth Malone will join Deborah Bull as co-presenter live in Trafalgar Square.
The BP Summer Big Screen relays are a great opportunity for people to get together, bring a picnic and enjoy wonderful ballet and opera for free - the events have continued to grow in popularity regardless of the UK's notorious summer weather.
