Places to cycle

Plymouth is a great place to get around by bike as you can enjoy:

  • riding across the city centre
  • being up close to historic buildings and monuments

If you are looking at things to do in Plymouth, Visit Plymouth can offer you some suggestions.

National cycle network

We are developing the National Cycle Network (NCN) in partnership with

  • Sustrans
  • other local authorities and organisations

We aim to have at least half of our NCN on traffic free routes and paths.

Plymouth is on a crossroads of NCN routes 2 and 27. View the Ordinance Survey's National Cycle Network map or browse the list of cycle routes in the south west.

For information about the improvements we are making to the cycling network visit our cycle route improvements page.

Cycle lockers

You can rent a cycle locker at different sites for £50 a year plus a £20 refundable key deposit. Rental is managed by BikeAway who supply the lockers.

Bike hires

There are plenty of cycle parking spots all over Plymouth. If you need to hire a bike there are bike hire shops. Information on bike hire can be found on Visit Plymouth.

Free Tandem Loans

We've teamed up with registered charity Charlotte's Tandems to lend tandems to people with special needs or disabilities for free. Find out about the scheme on the Charlotte's Tandems website.

Free adult cycle training with the use of trikes, tandems and adapted bikes

Free adult cycle training is available and offers coaching with the opportunity to ride:

  • trikes
  • tandems
  • adapted bikes

During the session alongside a qualified instructor, which allows everyone to try cycling. To book or find out more about this, contact Plymouth School Sports Partnership by emailing j.tutte@sjhcsc.co.uk.
