East End Transport Scheme - Finishing touches’ to Embankment Road
Following the opening of Embankment Lane and the outbound lane on Gdynia Way in November, work is starting in 2012 to improve the footpath and road surface on Embankment Road.
These local improvement works will add the finishing touches to the £19 million East End Transport Scheme which opened on 1 November 2011.
The work will take place on the outbound section of Embankment Road between Cattedown Roundabout and Grenville Road, where improvements will include replacing the existing footpath surface with new paving between the bus stop opposite Tintern Avenue and Langham Place. The carriageway will also be resurfaced with high friction surfacing to reduce the risk of skidding.
Work timings
Works will start in January 2012 for completion by March 2012, depending on weather conditions. The majority will be carried out during the day from 7.30am to 5.30pm although some surfacing will take place overnight.
How will traffic and public transport be affected?
For the footpath works on Embankment Road to take place safely and efficiently, the outbound bus lane between Cattedown Roundabout and Grenville Road will be closed, however one lane will continue to be made available for outbound Plymstock traffic.
Buses travelling to Plympton will be diverted via Laira Bridge Road and turn left into Heles Terrace. The pedestrian crossing at the southern end of Heles Terrace will be temporarily suspended to allow this manoeuvre. The bus stop between Cathcart Avenue and Grenville Road will be temporarily out of use with an alternative available on Laira Bridge Road, near the pedestrian access to Belvedere Road.
Local traffic access to the East End past the junction of Florence Place will also be restricted, with diversions in place to allow access to Belvedere Road and Prince Rock School throughout.
Pedestrian access to properties will be maintained at all times and temporary footpaths will be available. Where works are likely to affect local residents directly, they will also be contacted by letter and through the local media.
Getting around the East End
A summary of the main changes to traffic flow in Plymouth’s East End from 1 November 2011 can be found below:
City centre to Plympton
Instead of using Embankment Road, traffic now uses the new outbound lane on Gdynia Way (accessed from Cattedown Roundabout). Through traffic can no longer use Embankment Road as a section of it is now open only to buses, cycles, taxis and motorcycles.
Plympton to Plymstock
Traffic now travels down the new Embankment Lane link road instead of Heles Terrace to get to Laira Bridge Road.
Access into the East End area from Plympton
Traffic enters the East End via Embankment Lane, Laira Bridge Road, Cattewater Road and Elliott Road. There is no access to Heles Terrace from Embankment Road.
All other through traffic uses the same routes available before the scheme, with the benefit of improved road layouts, junctions, signalling and surfacing.
To see exactly how traffic now flows, please take a look at the maps below.

Meet the team
During the construction period we have been holding regular 'meet the team' sessions where you are able to ask questions of the Project Team. The next session will be on Tuesday 21 February 2012 from 5pm to 7pm at the East End Community Resource Centre.
