Scheme overview
The £19m East End Transport Scheme, which won funding from the Government's Community Infrastructure Fund and is supported by the Regional Development Agency's Regional Infrastructure Fund, will provide better transport infrastructure that will boost the area's local economy and support the future growth of our city.
At the heart of the scheme is a new public transport corridor along Embankment Road heading east, which will help improve the reliability of local bus services.
The scheme is expected to nearly halve the amount of traffic using Embankment Road and significantly enhance the local environment and quality of life for residents living in this area.
There are new and re-surfaced roads and pavements, new off-road cycle paths to better link the city centre with the East End, Plympton and Plymstock and improved pedestrian links offering better access to local shops and amenities in the area.
The scheme has been delivered in three phases:
Phase One involved the widening of Gdynia Way and the demolition, widening and rebuilding of Elliott Road Bridge which reopened to traffic on 31 March 2011. The new outbound lane on Gdynia Way opened to traffic on 1 November 2011.
Phase Two of the scheme started in November 2010 and was substantially completed in October 2011. Work has included public realm improvements in Embankment Road, Grenville Road, Desborough Road and Heles Terrace, with re-surfaced roads and pavements, new off-road cycle paths, traffic calming measures and improved pedestrian links, offering better access to local shops and amenities.
Phase Three began in March 2011 and involved the construction of the new Embankment Lane link road. Embankment Lane opened to traffic on 1 November 2011.
