Standards
To reduce the problems of tenants sharing facilities there are specified standards. These also ensure the facilities provided are adequate, for example, ensuring that a wash hand basin is provided with hot and cold water.
The standards are divided into 2 groups:
- bedsits, shared houses and student lets
- bed and breakfast accommodation
There is an increased risk of fire in HMOs, and further advice on fire precautions is available on our fire safety page. In order to issue a HMO licence we have to be satisfied that there is a minimum level of fire safety, which is set out in the HMO standards and can be found in the documents table below.
At licence application stage the property does not have to achieve the full standard as set out in the fire safety pages, although in due course we may require improvements to be made.
