Housing in Plymouth
A choice of housing is available in Plymouth, ranging from the traditional 'semi', to cottages, to stylish waterfront apartments complete with their own boat mooring. Wherever you live in Plymouth you will not be far from the city centre, waterfront, moorland, countryside and beaches.
With water surrounding approximately two-thirds of the city, and moorland/countryside the remaining third, many residential areas have spectacular waterfront and/or country views.
Much post war building has taken place, with the largest residential developments having been carried out to the north and east of the city.
In addition to the usual methods of home ownership, a large rented accommodation market has evolved. Property available to rent varies from bedsit accommodation, used in the main by the large University student population, to a comprehensive range of executive 'lets' which are ideal for temporary residents or those moving to Plymouth who wish to spend more time choosing their new home. The council house exchange system operates in the city.
Many districts in the city offer a mixture of older and modern housing with the majority having their own shopping centres, health centres and schools.
Dartmoor and several towns and country/coastal villages, offering diverse housing, can be reached within a 30-minute drive of Plymouth.
The Herald local newspaper publishes a 'Homeseeker' supplement every Thursday providing details of properties currently available in and around the city, and a search may be carried out on The Herald website. A property to let supplement is published every Tuesday.
If you require further details of current house prices in the region, please contact the Economic Development Team. For comparisons of average prices of residential property sales and the rental market please see the Housing in Plymouth factsheet.
