Testimonials

A number of Government departments are represented in Plymouth and, in fact, occupy over 74,000sq m (800,000sq ft) of offices within the city.

Government departments located here include:

Land Registry

Nationally, the Land Registry holds the world's largest property database, guaranteeing ownership of £1,300 billion worth of property, and more than £1m worth of property is processed every minute in England and Wales.

‘In addition to the employment package, our location in South Devon continues to be a key factor in attracting and retaining staff. Back in the 1970s Land Registry decided to locate our computer operations in Plymouth and we have been able to expand from a handful of IT professionals to our current operation of over 300 IT specialists.'

Rowland Coombs
Head of IS Human Resources, Land Registry

Valuation Office

The Valuation Office Agency is an executive agency of HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) with 85 offices spread throughout England, Wales and Scotland, employing around 5,000 people. Its main functions are to:

  • compile and maintain the business rating and council tax valuation lists for England and Wales
  • value property in England, Wales and Scotland for the purposes of taxes administered by the Inland Revenue
  • provide statutory and non-statutory property valuation services in England, Wales and Scotland
  • give policy advice to Ministers in property valuation matters

‘We have been extremely successful in recruiting and retaining staff across all grades in Plymouth. The quality of the staff recruited and our low rate of turnover have contributed greatly to us achieving our targets and being able to react quickly to changing and growing work programmes.’

Mike Webb
Team Leader, Local Taxation, Plymouth Valuation Office

Child Support Agency

The Child Support Agency is part of the Department for Work and Pensions and is responsible for running the child support system. Its business is to assess, collect and pay child support maintenance, ensuring that parents who live apart meet their financial responsibilities to their children.

'The Child Support Agency chose to locate one of its six main processing centres in Plymouth over 12 years ago. Since that time our Plymouth site has seen a dramatic rise in its workforce from approximately 500 staff to over 1000. The ability to readily recruit staff, together with the high calibre of new entrants and stability of the workforce, has been a contributory factor in establishing the CSA site in Plymouth as a highly productive organisation within the overall structure of the Agency.'

Paul Gerry
CSA Plymouth, Learning and Development and Workforce Planning Manager
