An exciting calendar of local, national and international events has been unveiled as Plymouth launches its second Summer Festival.

Farmers market

12 July
Sundial

With 25 stalls setting up twice a month selling a wide variety of local produce, the city centre farmers market is a lively and bustling market to visit. Situated by the sundial in the heart of the city centre shoppers can source produce which has been reared, grown or made by local farmers.

Visitors to the market can expect to find locally reared ostrich meat, pork, beef, lamb, locally grown strawberries and vegetables, plus locally produced cheeses, chutney, pies and pasties. The market is held in the city centre on the second Saturday of the month and is open from 9am to 5pm.


The Herald motor show

12 and 13 July
Piazza and Armada Way

Start your engines for The Herald’s spectacular Motor Show which will take place in Plymouth city centre over the weekend of 12 and 13 July.

The automotive extravaganza will feature something for motoring and bike enthusiasts alike with visitors able to get a glimpse of some of the latest models on the market.

On display in the Piazza and along Armada Way will be a stunning selection of preview cars, motorbikes, accessories and more.

South West dealers attending the show include Sanford Suzuki, Stratstone Jaguar/Volvo, Rowes Honda, IML Skoda/Chevrolet and Vospers who will be bringing a range of Ford, Mazda, Fiat, Subaru and Alfa Romeo models to the show.

Also attending, and new for this year, Lifton Bridge Car Sales will be bringing a selection of Proton and Perodua cars, topped off with a Piaggio mini van.

Motorbike dealers who will be at the two-day event include Riders of Bridgwater, who’ll be showcasing a fine selection of Harley-Davidsons to add a touch more style to the one-stop motoring show.

In Armada Way there will be something for the whole family with attractions including classic and vintage cars together with vintage fire engines to complement the new motors and the latest accessories.

The Institute of Advanced Motorists and Road Safety will be putting in an appearance alongside their 'fault car', with a prize up for grabs for the person who correctly identifies the most flaws on the vehicle.

Completing the line-up will be Green Energy Systems with Vectrix motor scooters, Cycle Life, Carnoisseur, Tyres Tyres Tyres, Pro-Tyre, and Plymouth Advanced Motorcycle, Tamar Historic Transport Club, South Devon Mini Club and Spam Fritter Mini Club.

Jill Brown, the South West Media Group’s exhibitions and events manager, said: "This year’s event will be of interest to both motoring and bike enthusiasts and lovers of classic and vintage cars."

The show is being held from 10am to 5pm on Saturday 12 July, and from 10am to 4pm on Sunday 13 July.


Sci-Fi Day

Saturday 19 July 2008, 10am until 4pm
Frankfort Gate, Plymouth City Centre

Come and join the fun with characters from Doctor Who, Star Wars and Superheroes plus other characters from the movies such as Batman, Spiderman, Darth Vader, Cybermen, Scooby Doo and the Mystery Machine. Come along to the second Sci-Fi Day on Saturday 19 July Frankfort Gate from 10am till 4pm.

Activities on the day will start at 10am with a whole range of fun and activities including:

  • a fancy dress competition with prizes for the best dressed Sci Fi character, judged at 2pm.
  • Doctor Who Micro Universe Tournament
  • Sci-Fi Artwork Display and Competition
  • Doctor Who Gameshow


School's Out

Saturday 19 July, 10am until 4pm
The Piazza, Plymouth City Centre

Plymouth City Council is throwing parents a lifeline at the 'Schools Out' event taking place at the city centre’s piazza, where they can find out what activities are on offer for children and young people over the summer holidays, for all budgets and family sizes.

The best of Plymouth’s youth organisations and attractions will be there with information displays, stalls and tester activities, plus there will be live music to keep everyone entertained.

Everyone is welcome to the free event. Simply turn up and find out how to keep the kids entertained throughout the summer.
