Community transport for hire

With funding from the Department for Transport, Plymouth City Council (PCC) is operating a vehicle hire scheme exclusively for community groups and associations.

The scheme operates 5 Mercedes Sprinter 15 seat minibuses all of which are wheelchair accessible and are satellite located around Plymouth.

Community groups must register with the scheme and all drivers must hold a Plymouth City Council, Devon County Council or PCV licence before hiring a vehicle, (training can be given to obtain licence). Once registered, community groups and associations can take advantage of low rate vehicle hire 365 days a year.

Hire charges are variable for half day, full day and multiple day hire and each vehicle is fitted with satellite tracking, which can record the exact mileage covered during a hire period. This give us the opportunity to charge a ‘pence per mile’ rate with an accurate mileage figure taken direct from the vehicle, taking the onus off the group having to take the reading themselves.

The tracking system also acts as a safety device; as we are able monitor the vehicles location should the vehicle be stolen.

The scheme currently has over 350 registered associations and is looking for more.
