It is ONS policy to publish population estimates rounded to at least the nearest hundred persons. Figures may not add up due to this rounding process.
Comparisons with previous estimates
ONS has recently made revisions to published past estimates, so changes in the city's age structure cannot be calculated from data previously published in our information sheets or on Plymouth City Council' website. Further information on the ONS revisions and the methodology for producing them can be found on the ONS website.
The table below shows that the city's population has grown for the 8th consecutive year, and has increased by 1,100 persons between 2008 and 2009. Most changes in the year have been quite small: up to plus or minus 300 persons for any five year age group. There was however a loss of 1,100 from the 25 to 29 age group which was more than offset by an increase of 1,300 in those aged 35 to 39 years (+700 males and +600 females).
