Definition of resident population

The mid-year estimates are based on the results of the 2001 Census and adjusted to take into account population change due to births, deaths and net migration between census day (29 April 2001) and the mid year (30 June 2007). They include all usually resident people whatever their nationality, students at their term time address, and members of HM and US Armed Forces.

Comparisons with previous estimates

The table below shows growth in the city’s population for the 6th consecutive year. Growth between 2006 and 2007 was most pronounced in the 20 to 29 age group (+2,900 persons) and in the older (40+) working age group (+1,000 persons). There was also a gain of 500 children under 5 years and an additional 200 elderly persons aged 65+.

However there were losses: -1,100 persons from the 30 to 39 age group and -900 from school ages 5 to 19 years.
