International Women's Day - Photo Shoot
Smeaton's Tower, Plymouth Hoe
This event has now taken place.
Women from across Plymouth, including the armed forces, emergency services, council staff, bus drivers, bricklayers, students and artists, braced the wind on Hoe to take part in a photo shoot for International Women's Day. The shoot was backed by Plymouth City Council, Police, NHS Plymouth, University of Plymouth, Fire Service, Jobcentre Plus, Chamber of Commerce, Theatre Royal, Racial Equality Council and other voluntary groups. The Principal of City College Plymouth, Viv Gillespie, highlighted the College's policy of encouraging women to apply for construction and engineering courses in Plymouth, echoing the International Women's Day focus on celebrating the advances women have made in recent years and the need for continued action, to ensure equal rights and opportunities for women across the globe. The Translate Plymouth Coordinator, who organised the event says: "It was wonderful to have so many Plymouth women on board, the sunshine was on our side and the Big Screen is a great opportunity for everyone to view a fantastic team result. Congratulations to everyone involved."
The photo and a short BBC film will be shown on the Big Screen in the city centre from Thursday 11 March to Saturday 13 March and turned into a poster for next year's 100th anniversary of International Women's Day. The photograph is also available below.
