Plymouth registration districts and sub districts

Plymouth registration district

  • Created 1 July 1837

Sub-districts

  • Charles Re-divided 1 February 1907
  • St Andrew Re-divided 1 February 1907

Charles became:

  • Plymouth North comprising the wards of Compton/Mutley/Greenbank/Charles
  • Plymouth South East comprising the wards of Laira/Friary/Sutton

St Andrew became:

  • Plymouth South West

NB GRO volumes:IX (1837 to 1851) 5b (1852 to 1930)

Upon the union of the towns of Plymouth, Devonport and Stonehouse in July 1937 the sub-districts Plymouth South East and Plymouth South West were abolished and the following sub-districts were created on 1 July 1937:

  • Plymouth North
  • Plymouth South
  • Devonport

A continuation of the old Devonport district. This sub-district was in turn abolished on 30 September 1949. Further sub-districts were created on 1 October 1949.

Plymouth Central Alexandra - the re-named old sub-district of Devonport

On 1 April 1967 the Plymouth Registration district was re-organised and 5 new sub-districts created namely:

Plymouth C These sub-districts incorporated the district of Plympton and the sub-districts of Plymstock and Yealmpton

NB When Plymouth became a Unitary Authority on 1 April 1998 the Plymouth district was restricted to those areas within the city boundary. Areas outside the city boundary were transferred to the South Hams Registration district.


East Stonehouse registration district

  • Created 1 July 1837

Sub-district

  • East Stonehouse

This district was abolished on 30 June 1937 upon the union of the towns of Stonehouse, Devonport and Plymouth.

Stoke Damerel registration district

  • re-named Devonport Registration District 9 November 1898)
  • Created 9 November 1898 (Re-naming of Stoke Damerel)

Sub-districts

  • St Aubyn
  • Stoke
  • Tamar On 1 May 1920 Devonport was re-divided into 2 sub-districts: Devonport North and Devonport South
