Marriage, civil partnerships and cohabitation

Getting married, or forming a civil partnership, is a happy and joyous occasion and we want to make the process as easy as possible for you.

You will find a range of useful information on these pages, covering advice on marriage, civil partnership, your legal rights when living together and what to do if a relationship breaks down.

Plymouth has a Register Office, various churches and numerous venues available for you to get married in.

The Register Office and licensed venues offer places for the registration of civil partnerships and celebratory services such as re-affirmation of vows and commitment ceremonies.

You can also find information on what you might need to do if you are getting married or forming a partnership abroad.

Please note that all bookings for Marriage and Civil Partnership are taken at the discretion of the Superintendent Registrar for the district in which the marriage is to occur. As we have a large number of venues on offer in Plymouth it is important that you check with the Register Office prior to booking your venue that there is availability of Registrars.

Plymouth City Council will accept no liability for booking fees or deposits paid to external venues where Registrar availability have not already been sought and a booking accepted by the superintendent Registrar.

The Superintendent Registrar will not take bookings for marriage, civil partnership or celebratory services on Christmas Day or Good Friday.
