Re-affirmation of marriage vows

This ceremony is for any married couple that wish to celebrate renewing their marriage vows in a unique and personal ceremony.

Often these ceremonies are associated with a special wedding anniversary, such as the tenth, twenty-fifth, fortieth. Wedding Anniversaries are there for couples to celebrate their love for each other. Celebrating your anniversary helps you to bond and rediscover the reasons why you chose to marry each other in the first place.

A re-affirmation of marriage vows ceremony is just as appropriate for couples at any stage of marriage. It is sometimes particularly relevant to those who have been through a period which put a strain on their relationship, but who wish to celebrate their renewed commitment to each other. Newly weds may wish to celebrate a marriage abroad with a re-affirmation of marriage vows ceremony, allowing family and friends to share the occasion.

Any married couple, of any age and married for any length of time, can arrange a ceremony. It does not matter if you do not live in the Plymouth area, you can still arrange to have your ceremony here.

Your celebration can take place in the Register Office situated just behind Plymouth’s famous Hoe, with its secluded gardens or in a venue registered by Plymouth City Council for this purpose.

The ceremony

The ceremony can be formal or informal, traditional or modern. It can incorporate readings, poetry and music which is special to you. Friends and family can take part, or it can be a simple ceremony for just the two of you.

You will be helped and encouraged to put together your own ceremony. Just as no two marriages are the same, no two ceremonies will ever be the same. Our staff can guide you through the options available to you.

A ceremony may include sections such as:

  • introduction and welcome
  • acknowledgement of children
  • readings or a speech by a special guest
  • renewal of vows
  • rededication/giving of ring(s)
  • signing of the certificate
  • closing words

The ceremony will be conducted by a celebrant from Plymouth City Council Register Office who will follow the choices that you make for your ceremony. You will be lead through the ceremony, repeating words after the celebrant or making personal vows to each other. You may choose to rededicate your wedding rings or exchange new rings to commemorate the occasion and special people in your lives can take part in the ceremony by presenting a reading or speech.
