Community safety
As an authority, we are committed to looking at the crime reduction potential of all our policies, budget decisions and service provision.
The 1998 Crime and Disorder Act provides local authorities, and a number of key statutory partners (including the police) with a legal framework to reduce crime and disorder. Section 17 of the Act requires local authorities, police authorities and other agencies to consider crime and disorder reduction and community safety when carrying out all service delivery and duties.
Section 17 (Crime and Disorder Act)
'Without prejudice to any other obligation imposed upon it, it shall be the duty of each authority to exercise the various functions with due regard to the likely effect of the exercise of those functions on, and the need to do all that it reasonably can to prevent crime and disorder in its area.'
We are also working closely with the Community Safety Partnership to contribute to partnership work relating to crime and community safety.
