Gypsy and Travellers Sites
For the latest information, please see our Goodwin Park news item.
The City Council is urging the public to become actively involved in helping to identify possible sites to be used as pitches for gypsies and travellers.
In recent years there has been an average of 20 unauthorised camps per year in Plymouth, each costing an average £6500 to deal with. In many cases, these have caused social tensions, complaints and serious problems for both settled communities and gypsies/travellers.
The council has a statutory duty to provide these pitches and, once suitable sites have been identified, will be able to bid for Government funding to cover the cost.
Possible council owned sites identified so far are in:
- Efford
- Southway
Further information about these sites is attached below. We will also be talking to landowners about sites that are in private ownership.
Over the coming months, a firm set of proposals will be built into the Council’s Local Development Framework which is the planning blueprint guiding how the city will develop in future. These plans will be widely publicised and subject to formal consultation. However if you would like to comment at this stage about the suitability of any of these sites, or you are aware of other sites you think may be suitable, please contact us.
Please note whilst we welcome views from all members of the public, feedback that contains racist comments will be disregarded.
