Reductions for people with a disability
Will I qualify for a reduction if I have a disability?
You may qualify for a reduction in your council tax if you or someone who lives with you (an adult or child), has a disability and you have special facilities in your home to meet the needs of a person with a disability.
If I qualify, how much reduction will I get?
If you qualify for a reduction, you will pay the amount of council tax charged for the valuation band immediately below the band allocated to your home in the valuation list.
For example, if your home is valued in Band C and you are entitled to a reduction you will pay the amount of council tax set for a home in Band B.
My home is in valuation band A. Can I qualify for a reduction?
Yes, from 1 April 2000, the reduction will be 1/9th of a Band D charge.
What special facilities must my home have?
Your home must have at least one of the following features which is essential or of major importance to the well-being of a person with a disability:
- a room (but not a bathroom, kitchen or toilet) that is used mainly for meeting the needs of the person with a disability, such as an extension or an extra room needed for storing dialysis equipment or
- a second bathroom or kitchen required for meeting the needs of the person with a disability or
- enough floor space for the person with a disability who needs to use a wheelchair indoors
How can I apply for a reduction?
If you think you qualify for a reduction you should contact us on the details in the right hand column for an application form or use the reduction for disabilities online form.
