How to pay your council tax

We normally ask you to pay your council  tax by 10 instalments due on the 15th of each month from April to January. You can choose from the following options:

Direct Debit

If you do not already pay by this method you can complete a direct debit mandate from the file attachments table below or complete the form included with your bill and return it to us at the Civic Centre. You can choose to pay on the 1st or 15th of the month.

The Direct Debit Guarantee

All banks and building societies that take part in the Direct Debit Scheme offer this guarantee:

  • if the amounts to be paid or the payment dates change, you will be told of this in advance by at least 10 working days as agreed
  • if Plymouth City Council, your bank or building society makes an error, you are guaranteed a full and immediate refund from your branch of the amount paid
  • you can cancel a Direct Debit at any time by writing to your bank or building society. If you do cancel the Direct Debit with your bank or building society please send a copy of this letter to Plymouth City Council

Please contact your bank. Our bank details must be quoted:

  • Sort code: 089021
  • Account number: 61003444
  • Account name: Plymouth CC TAX

Please ensure you quote the eight digit reference number from your bill.

Cheques, postal orders and money orders

Cheques, postal orders and money orders should be crossed and made payable to Plymouth City Council. We will not accept post dated cheques.

Please write the eight digit payment reference number from your bill on the back of your cheques.

If you need a receipt you must send a stamped addressed envelope.

In person ( you will need a payment card)

  • At the Civic Centre or any housing branch office
  • At a Post Office
  • At a PayPoint (cash only)

Online payments

A number of council services including council tax can be paid using our secure online payment system.

Automated telephone line

Your debit or credit cards can be used to pay on the automated telephone line 24 hours a day. Have your 8 digit council tax payment reference number, your credit or debit card and then telephone 01752 262243.

Telephone banking

When paying by telephone banking the following destination details must be used:

  • co-operative bank sort code 08-90-21
  • account number 61003444
  • account name Plymouth CC CTAX
  • remember to quote your 8 digit council tax payment reference number
