What are elections?
Elections are the democratic process where we elect candidates to represent our interests either locally or nationally. The candidate who receives the majority of the votes cast is declared elected.
There are three types of election that takes place in Plymouth:
Local Government elections
Will take place every year with a third of the Plymouth City Council seats due for election, except in 2009 and every four years afterwards when no elections are scheduled.
Parliamentary elections
A government may serve a maximum of five years. They may however call a general election at any time during their term of office.
An election to Parliament must be held by June 2010. Hours of Poll - 7am to 10pm
European Parliamentary elections
Members of the European Parliament serve a fixed term of five years.
Elections to the European Parliament will be held in June 2009. Hours of Poll - 7am to 10pm
