Registering to vote has never been easier. The introduction of 'rolling registration' means that changes to the electoral register can now be made on a monthly basis (except 1 September 2009 to 30 November 2009 when the annual register updating preparations are underway). Therefore, anyone who is not registered, or moved to a new address or has changed their name should advise the Electoral Registration Office and provide the necessary details.
All you have to do is fill in a registration form. You must fill in and sign the form yourself. If anyone else in your house is eligible to vote, they must fill in a separate form.
When you send us your form, we will add you to our list of new applicants. Any elector can then object to your name being added to the register. If this happens, we will write to you.
If your application is not objected to, we will change your details within 7 weeks of receiving your form. We will write to tell you when your application is allowed.
We will be updating the electoral lists as follows:
| If we get your form before .... | Your details will be changed on .... |
|---|---|
| Thursday 11 December 2008 | Friday 2 January 2009 |
| Friday 9 January 2009 | Monday 2 February 2009 |
| Friday 6 February 2009 | Monday 2 March 2009 |
| Tuesday 10 March 2009 | Wednesday 1 April 2009 |
| Tuesday 7 April 2009 | Friday 1 May 2009 |
| Tuesday 19 May 2009 | Thursday 28 May 2009 |
| Tuesday 9 June 2009 | Wednesday 1 July 2009 |
| Friday 10 July 2009 | Monday 3 August 2009 |
| Monday 10 August 2009 | Tuesday 1 September 2009 |
We will also tell the Electoral Registration Officer for your old address that you have moved, so that your name can be removed from that register. People who live at two homes (including students) are allowed to register at both. If you do not want to be removed from your other address, please explain why on your form.
There are special rules about names being added to the voters list during an election period. Because of these rules you may not be able to vote at the election if you are added during this time.
The system of 'rolling registration' is suspended during September to December, when the annual canvass of households takes place.
