Voting by proxy
You may wish to appoint someone to vote on your behalf. This person is called a proxy.
You will need to give a reason why you cannot vote in person, such as disability or employment and your application may need to be certified by your doctor or employer. This type of proxy application may last for an indefinite period.

Proxy voting at a particular election
Voters can also apply to appoint a proxy at a particular election, but must wait for the election date to be announced before applying. These applications do not need to be certified.

Deadlines for postal and proxy voting at elections
Although applications for postal and proxy voting may be made at any time of the year, to qualify for an election there are two deadlines:
Deadline one - 11 working days before polling day
- Postal voting application forms must reach the Electoral Registration Service by 5pm, 11 working days before polling day. This includes requests to:
- Changes of address for delivery of ballot paper
- Cancellation of a postal vote
- Change from postal to proxy or vice versa
Deadline two - six working days before polling day
- Proxy voting application forms must be received by 5pm, six working days before polling day. This includes:
- New proxy applications
- Requests to cancel a proxy vote or change a proxy appointment
