Lord Mayors Chains

Civic Regalia

The maces, robes and chains of office used by the Lord Mayor and the Deputy Lord Mayor and their partners are collectively known as the Civic Regalia and are symbols of the authority of the Civic Office which the Lord Mayor holds.

The Lord Mayoral Chain of Plymouth

The Lord Mayoral Chain of Plymouth is 18 carat gold, composed of five chains of oval and circular links, secured by three brooch and one pendant bars. From the latter hangs a circular medallion with ring handle, the obverse chased and engraved with the Arms and motto of the City and surrounded by the inscription 'Usurpatione depressi, legibus restiture, 12th March 1803' and on the reverse:

The Freemen of Plymouth request you wear this Medal
To be returned at the expiration of your Mayoralty
In Honour token of that inestimable branch of the British Constitution
Trial by Jury by whose verdict the right to elect a Chief Magistrate for the Borough was restored after having been unjustly withheld for upwards of three centuries and round the rim, and now practically illegible, 'Presented to William Lockyer in his Mayoralty 1st January 1816'.

The Lady Mayoress's Chain of Plymouth

The Lady Mayoress's Chain of Plymouth consists of a three, two and one festoon oval link Necklet in 18 carat gold, decorated with seed pearls and with the full Arms of Plymouth in 18 carat gold, enamel and emeralds.
