Plymouth Pictured project
Background
The 'Plymouth Pictured' project is a joint initiative between the Plymouth and West Devon Record Office and the Plymouth City Museum and Art Gallery to record and digitise over 80,000 photographs from the Plymouth area which date back as far as the 1890s.
Project
The project is funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund and involves the conservation, cataloguing and digitisation of the city's collection of photographs from the following collections:
- Plymouth City Engineers Department, photograph collection
- Rugg Monk collection (a local watchmaker, politician and photographer)
- Western Morning News newspaper, glass plate negatives collection
- Goodridge collection (a local photographer)
Resources
The project also involves the development of a series of learning and community-based resources that will enable local communities in Plymouth to access this unique record of their changing city. One of these will be to make some of the images available in each of Plymouth's seventeen branch libraries. Historic images of each community will be displayed on a large digital photo frame in each of the libraries.
Website databases
Images from the Plymouth Pictured project can now be seen on on our Plymouth Pictured and City through a Lens websites.

Our Plymouth Pictured' photography competition is now closed. A big thank you to all of you who took part.
Details of the winners are on our competition page and you can see all of the entries on our Flickr page.
All of the best entries have been added to the Record Office's archive collections, helping to create a legacy for others to enjoy in the years to come.
