Plaques
A commemorative and historical plaque is a tablet or plate featuring commemorative or historic information, most commonly of cast or etched metal. The aim of a plaque is to link a person or event with a specific location or building.
For well over 100 years, Plymouth City Council and its predecessors have commissioned, facilitated and/or adopted responsibility for the care of a large number of commemorative and historical plaques in the city.
Plaques come in a variety of shapes, styles and materials; the Barbican area contains a rich variety of representative examples. These include a series of fine ceramic plaques installed in the early 1900s and a later series of cast metal circular plaques installed in the 1970s.
Some plaques commemorate places, events or individuals that are considered to have made a significant contribution to society in general, nationwide or worldwide. Others celebrate contributions to development of the region or the City of Plymouth itself.
Plaques add additional interest to the local built environment and help both local residents and visitors to better understand the history and character of the city. They highlight the city’s role and influence, and the achievements of Plymouthians and Plymouth residents, down the ages.
