Museums

The Museum Service looks after five historic buildings:

• Plymouth City Museum and Art Gallery
• Plymouth and West Devon Record Office
• Smeaton's Tower
• Elizabethan House
• Merchants House

Just announced: two special events at the Elizabethan House on Monday 5 and Saturday 10 May, to mark the start of the 2008 Transat on Plymouth's historic Barbican!

New: Temporary exhibitions opening at Plymouth City Museum and Art Gallery on Saturday 3 May.

Over 300,000 artefacts, 80,000 photographs and a number of historic collections are cared for and conserved at the above locations. Thousands of historic documents are also housed at a variety of other locations including Mount Edgcumbe House and Buckland Abbey.

Temporary exhibitions, lectures and workshops are held throughout the year. The Museum also provides an Education Service for schools and proactive outreach and access services for community groups and adults. A youth forum called The Core also exists specifically for young people aged 13 to 18 years of age.
