Wild About Plymouth (WAP) is a family-friendly natural history group that is open to anyone in the Plymouth area. It is led by enthusiastic experts from Plymouth City Museum and Art Gallery, Plymouth City Council’s Nature Conservation Team and the University of Plymouth, plus other selected partners.


Eternal Creatures

Plymouth City Museum and Art Gallery, Drake Circus
Saturday 23 January, 12 noon to 3pm

Discover how scientists preserve animals for future generations in this fun and unique event. Pinned, pickled and stuffed creatures of all shapes and sizes from the Museum's natural history collections will be on display. There will be plenty of opportunities to try a bit of preservation for yourself too! Admission is free. No need to book.

Come along to the Museum for as little or as long as you like!

Fishy Goings On

Barbican Fish Market, Coxside, Plymouth
17 and 18 February, 6.30am to 8.30am

Get a glimpse into the life and smells of the Barbican fish market before the sun has risen! Watch the auction, come face to face with fish of all sizes, then relax and eat breakfast in a local café.

Admission is £3 per adult, £3 per child and under fives go free. Places are limited and must be booked in advance by completing and returning a booking form by Friday 29 January 2010. A booking form is available in the Wild About Plymouth leaflet in the documents table below.

On the day meet us in front of the National Marine Aquarium.

Parking: There are pubic car parks and on-street parking around Lockyers Quay and The Barbican


National Science and Engineering Week 2010: Change

Plymouth City Museum and Art Gallery, Drake Circus
Saturday 20 March, 11am to 4pm

Join us for a day packed with activities that explore how our planet is changing. Look at how animals and plants have vanished in the past and how those that exist are changing in order to adapt to the conditions of our modern world. Admission is free. No need to book.

Tudors and Tussie Mussies

Elizabethan House, 32 New Street, The Barbican
Saturday 24 April, 10.30am to 12 noon or 1.30pm to 3pm

Find out how and why the plants in the Courtyard and Cook's Gardens at our historic Elizabethan House were chosen and step back in time with our hands-on activities. 2010 marks 80 years since the house and garden were saved from demolition by the Old Plymouth Society and opened as a museum!

Admission is £2 per adult, £1.50 per child and under fives go free. Places are limited and must be booked in advance by completing and returning a booking form by Friday 16 April 2010. A booking form is available in the Wild About Plymouth leaflet in the documents table below.

Parking: There are pay and display car parks on Lambhay Hill and Notte Street plus lots of on-street short term parking (2 hours maximum) around the Barbican


Vanished Lives

Mount Wise Recreational Ground
Sunday 30 May, 12 noon to 3pm

Come to Mount Wise with us for fun filled event all about fossils. See specimens from the Museum's collections. Discover what Woolly Mammoths ate in Plymouth 20,000 years ago. Learn how scientists use fossils to understand environments that are millions of years old! Fun activities for the all the family and the local tea shop will be open too! Admission is free. No need to book.

On the day meet us at the Mount Wise Recreational Ground, Richmond Walk (towards James Street).

National Insect Week 2010: Big Bug Hunt

Efford Marsh Nature Reserve
Saturday 26 June, 11am to 1pm

Our old favourite is back for another year! Join our bug experts as we dip, dig and delve to see what creepy crawlies we can find in one of the city's best nature reserves. Admission is free. No need to book.

On the day meet us at the entrance to the reserve on Deer Park Drive (this is the entrance near the top of the hill just above Taw Close).

General information

Unless specified, events are free and there is no need to book in advance. We do ask that large groups telephone us prior to the event however and that children under 16 are accompanied by an adult.

If you are intending to bring a large group to a Wild About Plymouth event please telephone us in advance on 01752 304660. All children under 16 must be accompanied by an adult to our events.

We strongly advise that you check in advance if you are making a special journey to an event - just in case arrangements have to change due to unforeseen circumstances.
