Darwin's Voyage of Discovery

24 January to 18 April 2009

Charles Darwin was born on 12 February 1809. 2009 will mark the 200 anniversary of his birth.

He published the ground-breaking "On the Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection" in 1859. 2009 will mark the 150 anniversary of its publication.

Darwin's most influential voyage of discovery onboard the Beagle set sail from Plymouth on 27 December 1831.

During 2009 partners in Plymouth and Torquay will celebrate his life, works, discoveries and contribution to science.

This will include our exhibition, 'Darwin's Voyage of Discovery', on display from 24 January to 18 April 2009. The exhibition will be backed by Wild About Plymouth events on 31 January, 14 March and 18 April. We also hope to hold a series of lunchtime talks, special events and holiday workshops throughout the year. Details of these will be confirmed soon.

To mark the 200th anniversary of Darwin’s birth and the 150th anniversary of the publication of 'On the Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection', there will also be a programme of events and exhibitions at Torquay Museum and the University of Plymouth, as well as other venues across the city. Keep your eyes peeled for future announcements or bookmark the official Darwin200 website for Plymouth.
