Plymouth: Port and Place
Open from 29 November 2008
Official launch: February 2009
Explore the story of Plymouth and find out how and why our modern city has developed!
'Plymouth: Port and Place' will showcase a variety of objects from the Museum's and several other important City collections, including the City Archive and Plymouth Library Services.
Navigate your way through our chosen themes of Safe Harbour, Town to City, Naval Port and Plymouth Journeys. As you're welcomed into the port, discover how the ‘Three Towns’ of Stonehouse, Devonport and Sutton became one and explore how the sea, the military and centuries of conflict have helped to shape modern Plymouth.
Popular objects on display will include the unique Eddystone Salt, a carefully chosen selection of maritime and topographic paintings and several large and impressive ship models - including some fine bone models made by Napoleonic Prisoners of War.
What's more, you'll also be able to find out more about Plymouth’s connections with the ‘Heroic Age of Antarctic Exploration' with ‘Scott’s Skis’ back on show!
You’ll also be able to get a flavour of some of the wonderful historic photographs, prints, maps, documents and film footage preserved by the City with our Plymouth Pictured interactive database.
