Ground floor redevelopment

Plymouth City Museum and Art Gallery has successfully secured a £750,000 grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund for a major refurbishment. This, combined with match funding from Renaissance in the Regions and the Department for Culture Media and Sport Wolfson Foundation Museums and Galleries Improvement Fund, means that we can revamp the majority of our ground floor galleries, as well as our foyer and shop area, and display objects which have not been on show for a number of years.

The three new galleries we will be creating will showcase our ethnographic, archaeological and maritime collections. They will be called:

• Bringing the World to Plymouth
• Uncovered
• Plymouth: Port and Place

Redevelopment work is well underway. We partially re-opened with two of our temporary exhibition spaces on Saturday 3 May 2008. Other galleries will re-open throughout the summer and the official opening of our refurbished ground floor will follow in autumn 2008.

Don't worry though! A number of our services will continue to run as normal during our closure period, including our Museum in Transit Schools service, our Museum in Transit Community service and our Community Outreach work. We will also be offering a number of events and activities at venues across the city. Visit our events section for full details.
