Your School, Your Child, Your Voice
Monday 11 July 2005
Plymouth Novotel
This conference opened by Cllr Pauline Purnell, Portfolio Holder for Children's Services gave parents, carers and governors the opportunity to offer their views on inclusion. The Education Service is presently developing the City Council's inclusion strategy and wanted to ensure the views of parents, carers and governors were listened to carefully before the strategy document was written. The strategy will shape the planning for schools and other services for the education and well-being of children and young people in Plymouth.
The well attended conference was organised by the Plymouth Governor Support Team and the Plymouth Parent Partnership Service. 65% of schools were represented at the conference by at least 1 governor.
Delegates were asked to consider 10 key questions that would form the basis of the 2005 to 2008 strategy:
- How can we best promote and support inclusion in schools to meet the needs of all pupils?
- How can all services that support children and families becoming more inclusive and integrated?
- What realistic and manageable strategies can we develop to listen to the voices of children and young people and of parents and carers?
- How can we improve greater collaboration between schools, other education providers, voluntary organisations and parents' groups to promote and support inclusion?
- How can we ensure that the good practice that exists in many schools, early years settings, support services and voluntary organisations is shared and developed?
- How can we better support children and young people with transition points in their lives - eg starting school, changing schools and leaving school?
- How can we ensure that children and young people attend school?
- How can we promote/improve support for pupils' emotional, social and behavioural needs in schools?
- How can we more effectively and efficiently use financial resources to support inclusion?
- How can we ensure that our school buildings support inclusion of all pupils?
