Could you be a governor?
Are you interested in supporting and improving children's education in Plymouth? If so, why not consider becoming a governor? Governors come from all parts of society, ethnic backgrounds and ages. You don't need to be a parent or have any formal qualifications to become a governor, but you do need a willingness to contribute to a team, give commitment to a school, have an interest in education and have some spare time.
Being a governor can be very rewarding and a stimulating way to spend a few hours a month. Meetings are usually in the early evening and you will probably want to visit the school during the day and attend some school events. You may find the experience of working in a team involved in running a school can prove helpful in everyday life and may give you skills you can use in your job or other community work. Free training is available throughout the year.
How do you apply?
With a few exceptions, anyone over 18 can apply to become a governor. All candidates will have to agree to an application being made to the Criminal Records Bureau for an enhanced Criminal Records Bureau certificate.
There are different types of governors. Some are elected by parents, others are appointed by the Local Education Authority and some by the governors themselves. The Governor Development Team will be pleased to locate a vacancy which suits you and explain more about the appointment process. If you would like to know more please call us for an informal chat.
