Governor training courses

The Governor Development Team offers a variety of training courses for all governors.

You may also consider an appraisal of the governing body. The Governor Development Officer will be willing to assist any governing body wishing to evaluate its own performance.

We plan over 45 courses throughout the year and you will see from the programme that we are offering a selection of new courses for the forthcoming academic year. Most training is at Windsor House where there is level access and plenty of parking. Tea, coffee, water, biscuits and fruit are offered at all courses and we value your feedback on course content, the tutors and venue.

All training and helpline services are free to schools subscribing to Governor Services under Trading Fair. Governors from non subscribing schools are welcome to attend the training at a cost price of £45 per course.

We are keen to ensure that the training programme offers a variety of courses designed to help and inform governors and clerks. If you have any specific training requirements please contact the Governor Development Team. Individual governing body training at your school can be arranged by request. Topics may include:

  • Accountability
  • Evaluation and monitoring
  • Roles and responsibilities
  • Leading together
  • Governing body healthcheck

We offer development sessions for your whole governing body, working with you on your site at a time to suit your governing body. Some commonly requested topics are: preparation for OfSTED inspection, strategic planning, accountability and monitoring and evaluation.

To discuss your bespoke training/development needs please call 01752 307480 or email governor.development@plymouth.gov.uk.

Chairing and clerking skills

We offer a five module training course for chairs of governing bodies or committees, or for aspiring chairs. Clerks’ updates are available each term and individual or small group clerks’ training is available on request.

Clerk update

We offer termly training for clerks as part of their contracted hours. This is the most cost effective way to support the strategic development of a governing body.
