Information for peripatetic music tutors working in Plymouth schools
Plymouth City Council, the Local Education Authority (LEA), for Plymouth has appointed a Music Tuition Co-ordinator to act as a broker for Plymouth schools who wish to engage peripatetic music tutors for their students. The Co-ordinator is a former Director of the Plymouth Royal Marines Band who completed a Post Graduate Certificate in Education prior to taking up the newly created post of Music Tuition Co-ordinator.
If you are an accredited instrumental or vocal tutor with good references, a Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) clearance and are available for any additional work that might arise in Plymouth schools please complete a tutor information form to register your name or confirm that you are on the LEA's tutor database. A tutor information form in Adobe Acrobat format can be downloaded from the bottom of this page.
The LEA does not directly employ peripatetic tutors. Tutors are expected to be self-employed (registered as sole traders) and make their own arrangements regarding CRB clearance and National Insurance. These tutors will be able to invoice the LEA directly for their fees. Some tutors may already be on the Plymouth City Council payroll through other schools. In this case, they continue to claim back their fees on a monthly basis using the appropriate form. The LEA is keen to ensure that standards of music tuition remain high, staff will be working closely with schools to ensure that quality control is an integral part of the provision of music tuition.
Music tutors will normally be expected to teach groups of two to four students in each lesson. The schools at which they teach will, in partnership with the tutors, co-ordinate records of teaching hours per month to facilitate payment. This will be made by the LEA directly to each tutor based on a set rate of £25 per hour. Schools will make their own arrangements for collection of fees from parents and will, in turn, be invoiced by the LEA for the hours provided.
