Menus and meal prices
Primary schools menus are nutrient compliant
Following feedback from some pupils, parents and staff, we have made a few minor changes to our menus for primary schools and non-residential special schools which are being served in schools from the beginning of September. These menus will operate on a three week cycle through to the week commencing 20 October 2008.
All pupils will receive a copy of our 'dinner times' leaflet during the first week of term, which includes some facts about the service including the nutrient-based standards. You can download a copy of 'dinner time', along with the menus from the documents table below.
Menus
Our menus are revised on a termly and seasonal basis and wherever possible, reflect the availability of both local and seasonal produce. We are pleased to say that:
- the traditional roast is one of our most popular meals and all of the meat we use (chicken, silverside of beef and pork) is locally farmed and sourced from providers within the south west
- working with local suppliers, the haddock fish fillets used on our menu are locally caught and landed in the south west
- our homemade fish cakes are made in our kitchens using a mix of locally caught and landed white and oily fish. This meets the food standards requirements for the inclusion of oily fish on the menu at least once every three weeks
- for this menu cycle we have continued with the 'lighter choice' option which has been successful this year.
- we have continued efforts to improve and increase the range and choice of home cooked vegetarian meals but continue to welcome comments, suggestions and recipes from parents and carers about how we can further develop this area.
We welcome comments about the menu and range of meals available. Please email us with your comments and suggestions for menu and recipe ideas.
The primary school menu is published each Saturday in the local press and is available to download from the documents table below.
Some of our schools do not have full production kitchens, for example regen cooking facilities, but for this menu we have made every effort to increase the amount of cooking from scratch. However, at the following schools there may be some slight variations to the published menu:
- Drake Primary School
- Plympton St Mary’s Church of England Infants School
- Prince Rock Community Primary School
- Weston Mill Community Primary School
Please contact the school or kitchen manager direct for details of the weekly menus available at these schools or email us.
For secondary school menus, please contact the school or kitchen manager direct.
We are also able to cater for special diets including celiac, dairy free and nut allergy, but should your child have specific dietary needs please contact us and we will be pleased to discuss your requirements and identify a way that we can help.
Meal prices
We believe that the service offers excellent value for money and the current price of a school meal in Plymouth is:
- Infant, junior, primary and special schools - £1.70
This provides a main course, dessert and a drink of milk or water.
- Secondary schools - £1.95
This provides a main course and a dessert - 'the meal of the day' which meets the mandatory food standards.
To avoid discriminating against any pupil or student, the available free school meal (for those registered as eligible) and the paid for meal (the meal of the day) in secondary schools should both be available at the same price of £1.95.
A cafeteria style service is operated in secondary schools. Parents, carers, pupils and students should be aware that if items are selected from this service rather than the meal of the day then the cost of the selected meal could be different to the above price.
For information on eligibility for free school meals and how to apply please visit the free school meals page.
