Persons in Control (PIC)

As the appointed Persons in Control (PIC) of schools, Headteachers have the duty to manage their premises in accordance with various health and safety standards, regulations and legislation. The responsibilities are many, and an understanding of key health and safety issues is essential for fulfilling these responsibilities. Headteachers should now have undertaken PIC training and should be using the PIC log-book and guidance to ensure that these duties are carried out. For further information about the PIC Initiative along with the supporting documentation visit our persons in control support library page.

PIC asbestos workshops began this year and will be continuing each month throughout the year. It is very important that each PIC attends an asbestos workshop to maintain proper control of asbestos in schools. Email asset.management@plymouth.gov.uk for the dates of the next workshop - please mark the email for the attention of the PIC Coordinator.

Schools condition surveys

Plymouth City Council is committed to increasing children and young people's aspiration through the improvements of school buildings, which means we have significant concerns about the condition of some school buildings.

Plymouth City Council has commissioned condition surveys, carried out in accordance with the national methodology, for all the non-fee paying schools in the city. These reports, which were complete in 2010, are now available to schools. The comparison data and the guidance document is available below.

School condition/fit for purpose/legislation bid funding 2012 to 2013

Maintained schools in Plymouth are now invited to bid for local authority funding for 2012 to 2013. The bidding criteria and arrangements, including a pdf version of the pro-forma, are available below. All schools that want to submit a bid electronically should have received an Excel version of the pro-forma by email at the beginning of February 2012. If you did not receive this email, please contact the school organisation team.

The Department for Education (DfE) is currently consulting on the James review which proposes a radical 'shake up' of how the maintenance of school buildings will be funded. Please visit The Department for Education (DfE) website for more details.

If you require any further information or assistance about the bid process, please contact the School Organisation Team on 01752 307533.
