Blagdon's Meadow welcome art feature
A welcome art feature consisting of three carved wooden totem poles stands at the entrance to Blagdon’s Meadow.
The feature comprises three totem poles, which are about three meters tall, designed and carved by Robert Koenig in order to meet the following brief:
- to create a welcome art feature to be sited at the entrance to Blagdon’s Meadow, the art feature will give a lasting legacy to the Plymouth Single Regeneration Budget (SRB) Gateway Project and by giving the general public a flavour of why Blagdon’s Meadow is so significant, encourage people to visit the meadow
During the Gateway Project Prince Rock school looked at the natural history of the site and carried out work with Devon Wildlife Trust. Robert also worked with the school conducting carving workshops with pupils and the art feature reflects the schools involvement with the meadow.
The designs on the three poles have been inspired by the flora, fauna and heritage of the meadow and its surroundings. Carved from windblown oak timber from the Goodwood Estate no live trees had to be felled and the end result is a tasteful and fitting piece of public art.
