Forder Valley Local Nature Reserve
Forder Valley Local Nature Reserve covers 29 hectares of deciduous woodland, scrub, open fields and marshy grassland. 4 hectares of young deciduous woodland was planted below Sheepstor Road and Dartmouth Walk in 1992/1993.
The city has initiated an ongoing coppicing programme in some of the younger woodland compartments. Coppicing is a traditional method of woodland management whereby the hazel understorey is cut back every 7 to 10 years and the products used for the construction of sheep hurdles, thatching spars etc.
