Radford Woods Proposed Local Nature Reserve
Radford Woods Proposed Local Nature Reserve is located on land that was formerly part of the Radford Estate and as such it was managed as parkland for many years although sections of this woodland are of ancient origin. A subsequent decline in formal management has left a complex mixture of surviving beech and sweet chestnut plantation regenerating naturally with oak, ash, elm and sycamore.
Located in Plymstock this reserve covers 37.9 hectares on predominantly north facing slopes. As well as broad leaf woodland there are also wetland and grassland habitats and the site includes such features as streams and old quarries. Of particular interest is the presence of Deptford Pink (Dianthus armeria). This attractive pink flower was once widespread in the UK but is now thought to occur on only 24 sites.
Three public rights of way cross this reserve, one of which is part of the Plym Erme trail.
