Southway Valley Local Nature Reserve
Southway Valley Local Nature Reserve extends for 17 hectares. Its more important habitats include broad-leaved woodlands, extensive scrub and rough grassland. Some of the woodland is relatively young having developed naturally on old farm field systems.
The mature woodlands at the bottom of the valley were thinned in 1994/5 to allow the development of a stronger understorey and woodland floor flowers. The rough grassland areas are managed to control scrub invasion by mowing. This also improves the wildflower content of the grasslands which are a haven for a multitude of insect species in the summer.
