Recreation
"The estuary waters and surrounding environs provide for an outstanding natural arena for leisure pursuits"
The Tamar estuaries provide the basis for recreational activities widely used and enjoyed by locals, and increasingly by visitors and tourists.
The estuaries have been used for hosting large events such as the Trans-Atlantic race, the Cutty Shark Tall Ships race and international and national angling, yachting and dingy championships.
Numerous sandy beaches, Dartmoor National Park and a number of country parks are within easy reach of urban centres around the estuaries.
Special features:
- Over 3000 anglers regularly fish the waters which can be doubled by visiting anglers
- Water sports abound in the Sound, with sailing, canoeing, rowing, jet skis, water skiing, windsurfing, diving and swimming
- The 10 mile stretch of the South West Coast Path through Plymouth, provides a link between Cornwall and the South Hams in Devon. The Waterfront Walkway takes visitors along a fascinating tour of the waterfront from Admirals Hard to Jennycliff
- For those who prefer to keep their feet dry, there are many areas to enjoy walking, bird watching, and cycling
