Ham Woods Proposed Local Nature Reserve
Ham Woods is located just south of the Parkway, adjacent to the Burrington Industrial Estate north of the areas of Ham and Pennycross. The site is owned and managed by Plymouth City Council. Habitats include woodland, rough grassland, hedgerows and marsh. Ham Woods is a proposed Local Nature Reserve
The rough grassland was formerly used as grazing pasture for cattle. Ham Brook runs east to west through the valley and eventually opens out into Camel's Head Creek.
The varied habitats of this reserve support at least 21 species of butterfly and, over the years more than 80 species of birds have been seen or heard with more than half being regular visitors or residents.
A management plan has been put together covering Ham Wood outlining how the site will be enhanced and maintained. For more detailed information on access and the management refer to the Management Plan below:
Current projects
Stepping Stones to Nature, a four year project to get more Plymouth residents enjoying our parks and natural spaces in and around the city is working on Ham Wood doing site improvements, community events and conservation volunteering.
