How to apply
Once you have established whether you need planning permission, the next stage is to fill in the relevant application form. There are a number of different forms for different types of development and it is important to use the correct form.
Within the application pack there is a checklist, details of the fees you will have to pay, an equality questionnaire and a monitoring form. Plymouth City Council has a policy of equal opportunities for all. The equality questionnaire helps us to keep a check that the planning system is working well for everyone.
Application forms are available here, but please check with us if you are not sure which form to use. Alternatively, you can collect an application pack from our Planning Reception Desk on the ground floor of the Civic Centre, or we can send you one by post.
Plans and drawings
Along with the application form you will need to submit a site location plan and you may need to submit plans and drawings of your proposal. The plans must be of a good quality drawn in ink and to a metric scale, and for householders applications should include the following:
Site location plan
This must show the site outlined in red and North must be shown. The plan must be at a metric scale of 1:1250 or 1:2500. The site location plan should also include nearby properties, their postal numbers and street names.
Block plan
This should show the proposal in relation to the site boundaries, other buildings and trees within the site, and around it. The plan should be at a metric scale of 1:200 or 1:500
Elevations
These should show the relationship of any extensions or alterations to the appearance of the existing dwelling or any attached property. The plans should be drawn at a metric scale of 1:50 or 1:100 and must show all sides of the property affected by the proposal. Both existing and proposed elevations are required.
Floor plans
These should show proposed floor plans and the relationship of any extensions to the existing floor layout of the dwelling. The plans should be drawn at a scale of 1:50 or 1:100.
Online planning applications
Online planning applications are simple and easy to create using the Planning Portal. Use the forms and tools to create your proposal, calculate your fee and add any attachments. You can also pay the fee before you submit your proposal direct to us. If you'd rather send your application by post, you can create it online, then print it out and then return it to us.
