Environment
From an environmental point of view, landfill is not a good way of dealing with our waste. It produces gases as biodegradable materials, such as paper, wood and food waste rot down.
The two main gases given off, carbon dioxide and methane, contribute greatly to climate change, with methane being the worst of the two. Landfills also produce toxic liquids as the waste degrades, which is harmful to the environment unless collected and specially treated.
A lot of waste that is currently landfilled could also be recycled, which would save energy and conserve natural resources. Producing recycled paper, glass, plastic or textiles is usually more energy efficient than making it from new sources.

Devon is one of the largest counties in England, with wide spread communities, so dealing with waste closest to its source is important both for economic and environmental reasons.
