Council Tenants
When someone moves into their council house, they receive a copy of the Tenancy Agreement. This clearly states what a tenant's responsibilities are and outlines all of the conditions.
These refer to various issues including paying rent, nuisance, harassment, damage and the keeping of pets. If tenants cause or allow others to break those conditions, the council will take action and as a last resort apply to obtain a court order which will bring the tenancy to an end. It also outlines the council's obligations to tenants such as carrying out repairs.

Tenant Participation
The City Council is committed to involving Council tenants in decisions affecting their homes and estates through consultation and participation.
The Council also actively supports the development of tenants' groups and has funded the Federation of Residents and Tenants Association.
Consultation and participation is for local residents and housing officers to work together and, through this process, improve the houses and environment in which residents live.
Over 40 tenants' groups are well established across the city. If you want details of existing groups or advice on setting up a new one, contact your Housing Area Office, and/or Plymouth Federation of Tenants and Residents Associations (PETRA).
PETRA contact details are shown opposite.
For further information see the Tenant Participation pages.
Insurance
If you have bought a council flat from the City Council, your buildings insurance is arranged through the Council. In the event of a claim arising you should contact the Finance Department on 01752 304429. Council house tenants should arrange their own contents insurance, but home (building) insurance is through the City Council's buildings insurance policy. See the Tenant's contents insurance scheme pages or contact 01752 307105/6/7 for further details.
